Homelessness in late life: Growing old on the streets, in shelter, and long-term care

This talk focuses on findings from a four ethnographic year study of homelessness among older people in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The study was carried out in the context of rising homelessness among older people, including people who become homeless for the first time in late life. It outlines a number of contradictions that exist for older people with regards to achieving ideal frameworks such as ‘ageing in place’; how homelessness among older people exists at the intersections of ageing, housing, income security and care rather than in distinct spheres that correspond with organisational structures and services. The paper highlights the importance of developing an inclusive lens that recognises and addresses the needs of older people.
